Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Introductory Training

  • Union Square ACT Center 41 Union Square West New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

Julian Manetti-Cusa, Psy.D. and Rob Handelman, Psy.D. are excited to announce a small group format introductory ACT training beginning April 7th, 2017. This 4-session training will focus on developing the fundamental skills and strategies used in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

About ACT

ACT is a well-established psychotherapeutic intervention, found to be useful in the treatment of numerous difficulties and disorders including: depression, anxiety, addictions, chronic pain, trauma, workplace stress, etc.  With its emphasis on present moment acceptance and mindfulness strategies, ACT focuses on altering how we relate to our internal experiences (e.g. difficult thoughts and feelings) and building skills that permit us to take action even when doing so is difficult.  This foundational skill set allows us to identify our life values and commit to moving towards what matters most to us. We have found that the practice of ACT is invaluable in our clinical work and has profoundly impacted our personal lives.

The Training

We will cover all aspects of the practice of ACT, both didactic and experiential, with an emphasis on the experiential – the way that ACT works best.  This will include: the ACT model of psychopathology, the six core processes of the model, mindfulness exercises, metaphors, and role-plays.  Whether participants would like to use ACT as their primary therapeutic intervention, or whether they would like to integrate it into their "toolbox" as an adjunct to other types of therapeutic approaches, this training will enhance your therapeutic effectiveness. It will invite you to step outside of your comfort zone and move forward in your work in the ways that matter most to you.

Beginning week 1, participants will be able to integrate workshop material into their clinical practice (as well as in their personal lives). As we are limiting this group to 10 participants, we will have the opportunity to interact directly with each other and the material in a unique and warm atmosphere.

No prior experience or knowledge of ACT is required. Clinicians with prior ACT experience who want to deepen their proficiency and knowledge are of course welcome! Those interested can continue to participate in the growing New York City ACT community activities (i.e. further trainings, individual/group supervision, ACT peer groups, local ACT chapter activities, etc.).
